Richmond residents who are looking for a way to give back to their community will soon have a way to do so.
The Madison County chapter of the American Red Cross is actively looking for volunteers. The volunteers will work with the Red Cross Disaster Action Team and will respond to fires at single and multifamily homes throughout Richmond and the surrounding area. Ideally, volunteers will have a flexible schedule so that they can be available and on-call in the event of a fire.
Volunteers who work with the Disaster Action Team help families displaced by fire find shelter, provide them with access to necessities, and offer support to those families. The help they provide is immediate. In some cases, volunteers arrive on the scene to help families affected by fire as it is still burning. Last year, volunteers with the American Red Cross Disaster Action Team in Madison County helped 98 people and responded to 27 fires.
Organizations looking for volunteers can use Flyers to get the word out. These could include details about what is expected of volunteers and when training sessions are held.
The next orientation for Red Cross volunteers in Richmond will take place at the Central Bank and Trust Building, on Main Street, next Tuesday, August 16 at 6:00 pm. Class size is limited to 10 volunteers, so applying for a spot at the Red Cross' website first would be wise. Interested volunteers are also invited to drop in without registering.
