A large number of volunteers helped to make the dream of homeownership come true for a Richmond woman.
The house was dedicated on Saturday July 11, for Susan Barnes, who works at an area nursing home. Sharon and Gary Osborne, who own ‘June Morning’ and ‘The Added Touch’, wedding planning companies, donated the land on Lake Street for the new home.
Around 150 members of the local community either donated time or money to help with the construction of the home, including students from area high schools and colleges. Members from the Richmond Garden Club helped get the lawn and garden area ready, by planting flowers. The Richmond Exchange Club provided smoke alarms for the new house.
Habitat for Humanity can use the success of its recent building project, as well as poster printing, to call attention to its other needs. The organization currently has 20 applications for homes. Its goal is to try to build eight more by June 30, 2016. At least three more homes are slated to start construction starting next month.
Judy Flavel, the executive director for the Madison and Clark Counties affiliate of Habitat for Humanity, stressed the organization's strong need for volunteers and for donations, noting that it needs both land donations and financial donations.
People interested in volunteering with the group, either on a construction project or in its offices, are invited to contact the Richmond office for more information.
