Richmond parks to get more trails

At the beginning of March, the Richmond Parks and Recreation Board voted to approve the design for 1.5 miles of unpaved trails in Camp Catalpa Park.

Once the new trails are added, the park will have two full miles of trails, according to the director of parks and recreation, Erin Moore. Currently, there is one half mile loop in the park. The additional trails will create two new loops, one of which will be 0.7 mile, and the other 0.8 miles.

The goal is to complete the work on the new trails by June 30, the end of the fiscal year, according to Moore. Funding will come from a $26,650 Federal Highway Administration grant and a 100% match of funds from Richmond.

Cities that need additional trails can use Brochures to make the argument for the additional trails. In the case of Richmond, the city needs more than seven miles of unpaved trails to meet national standards. The city also needs an extra 50 acres in its park system to live up to national standards.

Additional plans are in the works for Camp Catalpa Park; the board also voted to partner with the Rose Barn Theater to use part of the park as an outdoor theater. The theater group will be building a permanent stage on the park's east side.
