Richmond families were given an opportunity to celebrate their love for Star Wars and close out the holiday season on Monday, January 4.
The Madison County Public Library held a special training program for Jedi Knights. The program was slated for the last day of winter break, a date that was picked in hopes of boosting turnout, as it gave parents and children one last thing to do before school started again. Libraries often make use of postcard printing to spread the word of training programs like this to patrons.
Although promoting a strong parent-child connection is the goal of all of the library's programs, youth services assistant Bethany Halbert told the Richmond Register that the Star Wars program "was a little extra special in that department".
Since first movie in the Star Wars series was released in 1977, many people who saw it as young children and became lifelong fans are now raising children of their own. Halbert noted that she saw a mom at the event with two preschool aged sons. By the end of the hour-long program, the mom and sons were engaging in their own Lightsaber battle.
Activities scheduled for the special training program, which saw the children's area of the library transformed into a Jedi Knight School, including laser blaster target practice and a hunt for asteroids. Parents and kids could relax in the "cantina", which offered Wookie cookies, Yoda Soda, and Princess Leia Buns as snacks.
