Students attending Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond are now able to earn a certificate in theater, as the theater program has been recently expanded at the school.
Following a series of talks between theater department professors and directors and Michael Benson, the president of the university, the school has decided to create two theater certificates. Students pursuing the certificates can choose to specialize in either design or performance.
When schools create a new certificate or degree offering, they can use Brochures to let current and prospective students know about the new programs. To earn either certificate, students are expected to take 24 credit hours in theater classes.
Performance students will take classes ranging from acting to text analysis. They'll also perform in the school's plays and productions. Design students will also take acting classes, as well as design and directing courses. As part of the practical aspect of their certificate, they will work backstage or on technical components of the school's productions.
Prior to the new certificates, students only earned school credit for working on the technical side of the production, not for performing in the school plays.
The university expects the first theater certificate courses to be available starting in the fall of this year. Students who are currently in the English with theater emphasis BA program, which was recently suspended, will have the option to switch to the certificate program or to finish their current degree as is.
