Richmond celebrates 2nd Sunday

For people across Kentucky, the second weekend in October is a chance to celebrate healthy living.

The University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension created 2nd Sunday Weekend in an attempt to encourage people to become more active, and it has taken place in Richmond and other parts of Kentucky for about nine years. Agencies that organize community focused events can use Mailing services to spread the word.

This year's weekend will get started with two events this Saturday, October 8. Registration for the Pink Boa 5k Run begins at 9:00 am. The race itself kicks off at 10:00 am and will be held at the Blue Grass Army Depot's Moral, Wellness and Recreation area.

Many of the runners participating in the 5k have also been participating in the county's public library ‘Couch to 5K’ program, which helps people train to run. The run is free, but the county is accepting donations.

The Rally for the Cure Golf Scramble is also scheduled to take place at the Depot's Pioneer Golf Course on Saturday. The fee to participate in the Scramble is $35, which includes lunch. Proceeds from the golf tournament and the 5k will support the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

The activities continue on October 9, the actual 2nd Sunday. Several events will be held at Battlefield Memorial park, starting at 2:00 pm, such as geocaching, hiking, and biking. Another option is the Baby Buggy/Tyke Trike Parade, during which parents can push their children in decorated strollers.
