Hickory trees are one of the native species that can be found in and around Richmond, and a one-day workshop will teach how to harvest their bark for use in a variety of projects.
The Woodworking School at Pine Croft will be obtaining hickory bark from the woods at Berea College. If the weather is appropriate, the activity will open with some time in the forest, discussing how to choose good bark trees and also safety considerations to keep in mind.
After that, the indoor portion of the session will utilize pre-cut saplings, and the group will learn how to shave the bark. This material is traditionally used for ladderback chairs, but rarely is nowadays due to the often labor intensive harvesting process.
Attendees will be able to keep the bark they peel, and it can be incorporated into various woodworking and craft projects. Everyone should wear long pants. Light refreshments will be provided.
A hands-on activity gives those who are interested in learning a skill a chance to get in some practice. Waivers, supply lists, tip sheets, and other handouts for an event can be ordered from area Print shops.
This introduction to the art of harvesting hickory bark is scheduled for May 31, 2025. It will begin at 9:00 am at 1865 Big Hill Road in Berea.
