At the Telford Community Center YMCA in Richmond, the cost to replace dead lightbulbs in the gymnasium is more than $1,500, which is why a $5,000 grant from Xerox recently proved to be a great boon to the Y.
Xerox did not just donate money to the Y; several employees from the company also donated their time. On a recent Saturday, a team of volunteers worked on repainting one of the many rooms inside of the building. The organization could use printing services to create Banners highlighting the repairs needed and the way the grant money is helping.
Ken Wedel, who has been the CEO of the Y for around four months, stated that the community center plans "to make that money stretch as far as possible".
Along with the fresh coat of paint and a few new lightbulbs, Wedel noted that the Y is in need of a number of other repairs, ranging from replacing broken windows on the building's façade, to adding air conditioning and heating to the gym.
The Y has received additional donations in recent months, which it has put to good use. It was able to add a handicap lift to its swimming pool and recently added a new rowing machine to its exercise room.
Along with donations such as the one from Xerox, the Y earns much of its funding from the 6,500 people who pay for membership to the organization, which allows them to use its facilities.
