The annual Grill Fest, held during the Madison County Farmers' Market in the parking lot of a Lowe's home improvement store, let people sample locally grown vegetables, as well as pork and beef raised in the area.
A highlight of the event was showcasing the numerous ways vegetables could be prepared on a grill. Among the produce-centric recipes prepared that day were zucchini and squash salad with a no-sugar balsamic vinaigrette, couscous corn salad, and grilled corn on the cob.
Gina Noe, an extension staff member for family and consumer science, told the Richmond Register :
"A lot of people think you can only do a hamburger or steak on the grill, but you can do a lot more."
Part of the goal of Saturday's event was to teach people new ways to cook vegetables. The Extension service could use Print companies to create printed recipes for people to take home and recreate.
The other goal of the day was to introduce people to locally grown vegetables and the bounty Kentucky has to offer in the summertime. Noe stated this is the healthiest diet, and noted that people not only know exactly where the food came from, but also have the assurance that it was picked that day or the day before.
