A group of around 120 resident advisors from EKU spent the day cleaning, painting and generally improving the appearance of several parks across Richmond. A group were found at Irvine-McDowell Park weeding and painting, while others were at the Lake Reba Recreation Complex and Million Park.
Among the tasks they performed were picking up litter, power-washing, painting dugouts and fences and laying down mulch.
The community service was part of EKU Housing and Residence's Volunteer Day. The 120 or so RAs were already back on campus, undergoing training for their roles in the university's dormitories.
Universities that are hoping to encourage students to participate in community service and volunteer projects can use flyer printing to highlight upcoming opportunities.
EKU generally has a volunteer work day in the fall and spring semesters for the RAs. As the residence hall coordinator, Evelyn Rucker told the Richmond Register:
"It's something we do to give back to the community and let the (resident advisors) get a chance to do some community service."
The volunteer day also helps the students, many of whom aren't originally from Richmond, feel more invested in their adopted home.
