The Martin Luther King Unity Breakfast will kick off Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrations in Lexington next month. The event is presented by, and is a fundraiser for, the Alpha Beta Lambda Chapter Education Foundation.
The breakfast will feature several speakers who will talk about Dr. King's legacy. The Alpha Salutes and Unity Awards will be handed out.
The organization is currently holding an essay contest for middle school children. The theme is ‘Unity: from Rhetoric to Reality’. The first-placed essayist will win $500 and the opportunity to read their essay at the breakfast, while second place comes with a $300 cash prize and third place wins $100.
Sponsorships are also available for the breakfast from $400 up to $5,000.
Later on in the morning, there is usually a Unity March hosted by the Martin Luther King Center at the University of Kentucky. This year's parade is still to be determined.
