Store group renames and reopens in Olathe

The parent company of Price Chopper stores has turned one of its locations into a Payless Discount Foods.

Formerly known as Balls Price Chopper, the store has a new slogan to go along with its name: “No Game. No Gimmicks”. The renamed store is located in Olathe at 2101 East Santa Fe Street. In an attempt to keep prices low, the store is not accepting credit cards and asks customers to bag their own groceries.

Price Chopper stores are neither a chain nor a franchise, but are five separate chains that operate under the Price Chopper umbrella. The owners of all the chains are members of Associated Wholesale Grocers, a cooperative located in Kansas City. Being members of a co-op means that the 400 stores that make up the five chains, though they operate almost totally independently, can buy in bulk to get their supplies at a reduced price.

Price Chopper is a “concept group” created by AWG, and the stores within it tend to be large and carry out a high volume of business. Ranging from 50,000 to 92,000 square feet in size, these stores often anchor major shopping centers.

The management of the renamed store could work with a banner printing company to create an item to hang over the door to welcome shoppers to the new concept.
