Four students from Olathe North High School will be taking part in the National Science Bowl in the nation's capital.
The team comprises two seniors – Triton Wolfe and Connor Seacat – and two juniors - Arvind Subramanian and Dylan Honors – all of whom are from Olathe North's Distinguished Scholars program. Amy Clement, who teaches science, is their sponsor. Clement said she believes this is the first time any team representing the Olathe School District has had the chance to compete at the national level.
The students have developed their own method of study that they are using to prepare for the competition. Wolfe put tests for the team together using practice questions supplied by the National Science Bowl. He then determined which questions were the most difficult for the team, and which team members did best in each subject. Those students will take the lead in those areas.
The National Science Bowl is sponsored by the United States Department of Energy. The bowl is a national academic competition devised to test students' knowledge of all areas of math and science. Subject areas covered include chemistry, biology, physics, Earth sciences, and energy.
This year's bowl will be held in Washington, D.C., from April 28 to May 2. The Olathe School District might consider working with a postcard printing company to create a card about the team's accomplishment to mail to school district residents.
