Olathe's new high school, Olathe West, will not open until next year, but Jay Novacek, the principal, gave a tour to Christa Dubill of 41 Action news.
According to Novacek, traditional ways of education students have changed, and the school is changing with them.
To begin with, the school is divided into “communities”, with ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades each a separate community. Each community will be located in its own area within the school. Since the district expects about 2,000 students to attend, creating these communities will give students the feeling they are attending a much smaller school. The communities will then be further divided into “neighborhoods” to create even smaller networks of students.
In another change, assistant principals will work in various locations throughout the school, rather than being in a central office. In addition, various areas will merge into one another. According to Novacek, the cafeteria, commons, and library all run into one another, creating a commons that resembles a college's student union.
Indeed, flexible space can be found throughout the building, sometimes in unexpected places such as the learning stairs. These wide, deep stair steps seem more like bleachers than a traditional staircase. The classrooms have been revamped as well, and feature open spaces with nontraditional seating, and no doors.
