Olathe put a masterplan in place for its downtown in 2003, and is now asking for input from residents as to the improvements they would like to see in an updated plan.
Residents have an opportunity to attend a Public Design Studio to ask questions, discuss ideas, and even submit sketches of the Olathe in which they would like to work, live, and play.
In 1957, Olathe's population boomed with the completion of I-35, which made it easy for people to get to the community. In the 1970s, renewal projects concentrated on the suburbs, with the result that some neighborhoods were neglected, beautiful older buildings were demolished, and the downtown began to decline.
In the 1990s, efforts began to revitalize the urban core, resulting in the 2003 Envision Olathe Downtown Plan. With the plan in place, interest in the downtown revived, new businesses opened, investments were made, and streetscaping made the roads more attractive. Now, city officials want to update the plan again, reflecting current opportunities, goals, and conditions.
The Public Design Studio meetings are scheduled for this evening and tomorrow evening, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm both days, at the Olathe City Hall, 100 East Santa Fe Street. People are welcome to drop in for a few minutes, or spend the entire evening at the meeting.
Efforts like this can benefit if organizers work with a postcard printing company on a reminder card for Mailing to area residents.
