The Olathe Civic Theatre Association is currently running is The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!), which is a five-act performance, each part of which parodies the style or productions of American and British composers.
The plot of the show is the same in every act; the villain threatens the young ingenue because she cannot pay the rent, and it is up to her young man to save her. He succeeds five times, each time in the style of a different composer.
The first act spoofs Rodgers and Hammerstein shows like Oklahoma!, while the second takes aim at Stephen Sondheim. In the third act, shows like Auntie Mame are the target, while act four takes on Andrew Lloyd Webber and his Phantom of the Opera, Evita, and others. The final act tips its hat to shows like Chicago.
The Olathe Civic Theatre Association has been presenting plays in the Buddy Rogers Playhouse for nearly 40 years.
The show opened February 13 and runs through March 1 in the historic venue. Buddy Rogers, who was one of the stars of the silent film Wings, provided some of the funds to convert the building from a church to a playhouse.
