Olathe residents who want to take an in-depth look at their government have a chance to do so when the next Olathe Civic Academy starts in a few weeks.
The Academy gives citizens a chance to meet and interact with elected officials and city staff members. The comprises 10 sessions, each led by a representative from all the department of the city; four leaders come from public agencies.
The Academy is open to those who live or work in the city of Olathe. Four slots have been reserved for students who are seniors in high school in the Olathe School District. Attendees are expected to take part in all nine sessions, which meet weekly on Thursday nights, and in addition, attend one meeting of either the Planning Commission or the City Council, as well as attending one graduation that takes place at a meeting of the City Council.
Academy classes start January 12 and run through March 9 from 5:45 pm to 9:00 pm. There will also be one bus tour on March 4 from 8:00 am until noon. The Academy is free, and dinner is provided for participants before each session. However, attendance requires a substantial commitment of time. Applications can be made online via the city's website, and the deadline is January 5.
