Lovers of the stage who live in Olathe have a lot to look forward to this season. According to a recent news item, the curtain was slated to go up on Theatre in the Park productions on Friday, June 6th, with ‘Pirates of Penzance’ the first show on the boards.
The production is not only the first one up this year; it’s also the first time the theater has produced a work by Gilbert and Sullivan. Other stage productions this year are ‘Guys and Dolls’, ‘Honk’, ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’, and ‘Ragtime’.
The venue also features movies, and the schedule for 2014 includes ‘Frozen’, ‘Cars’, and ‘The Love Bug’ in June; the ‘Iron Man’ trilogy in July; and classics like ‘The Wizard of Oz’, ‘Easter Parade’, and ‘Some Like It Hot’ in August. Movie admission is $1.
Changes to the theater itself, which is about 11 miles from Olathe, include a new rental policy for lawn chairs, which are now available for $5. Patrons can also have a chair in reserved seating set aside for $20. There are improvements behind the scenes as well, where the theater has built new dressing rooms large enough to hold twice the number of performers as previously. The new facilities are air-conditioned, which will be very welcome in the summer heat.
