Olathe plans 1860s Halloween

Olathe has announced it will be having a different kind of Halloween night this year.

Rather than the traditional trek from house to house, the city is offering ‘Trick or Treat OFF the Street.’ The event will give people a chance to celebrate Halloween without the dangers that can occur when trick or treaters walk on unfamiliar streets in the dark.

Instead, residents are invited to dress in their best Halloween costume and go to the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm for a variety of activities that illustrate what life was like in the 1860s. Flyer printing can be used to advertise public events like this.

Although details are still being finalized, activities could include playing popular games from the 1860s, demonstrations of a cook stove, and blacksmithing demonstrations. Rides on a hay wagon drawn by horses are also planned. Various local organizations and businesses plan to set up candy stations to take the place of the traditional visits to houses to trick or treat.

‘Trick or Treat OFF the Street’ will take place October 24, from 3pm until 6pm. Youngsters three and under will be admitted for free. Visitors above that age will be charged $3 if they register in advance, or $4 at the event. A free shuttle will run from Olathe North High School to Mahaffie Stagecoach and it is suggested that people take advantage of the service.
