Olathe’s The Layne Project will be hosting a special digital screening of the short film Tommy later this month, aiming to encourage understanding and discussion of children experiencing anxiety about familial changes.
Tommy, written and directed by Australian filmmaker and lawyer Darren Mort, tells the story of a boy who invents an imaginary friend and a fantastical world inside a submarine to deal with the stress of his parents’ divorce and custody battle. The film was first released in 2011 but has recently been screened by social work organizations around the world.
The Layne Project will provide two screenings of Tommy, with one aimed at professionals dealing with family separation such as therapists, judges, and attorneys and the other intended for a general audience. Each screening will be followed by a discussion that aims to follow the principles of CIT, which stands for “Collaborative, Inspirational and Transformative.” The screening is part of the Layne Project’s goal to reduce the stress on children during divorce and other Forms of familial change. Many non-profit organizations use screenings such as this, advertised by tools like poster printing, to provide public education.
The screening of Tommy will take place over Zoom, with discussion being lead from the Layne Project offices in Olathe. The screening for professionals will take place on January 29, with the one intended for all taking place on January 30.
