Before they pass the city's budget, Olathe officials want to hear from the city's residents, and held a public meeting on the subject on July 7.
At the meeting, city staffers presented the proposed 2015 budget, as well as Olathe's Capital Improvements Plan (CIP), to members of the public for their comments. The CIP lists major projects designed to improve the public sector, such as streets, over the next five years.
Emily Vincent, Olathe's budget manager, said the city has worked hard to make certain the process is as clear as it can be, and citizens' input is extremely important. She said the budget is the city council's biggest decision, and getting residents' feedback is vital.
Olathe residents who attended the meeting were intrigued at the opportunity to get a look at the city's inner workings, as well as being happy to give their input. Two attendees, Doug and Ruthie Osa, decided it was time to educate themselves about Olathe, where they have lived for 34 years. Talking to the Olathe News, they said they were impressed by the presentation and interested by the workings of the budget. They added they had always felt Olathe handled its money well, and the meeting reinforce that impression.
City officials could work with a flyer printing company on a mailer for residents, with the budget and CIP proposals enclosed. Residents could return them with their feedback.
