The City of Olathe is now streaming the meetings of its City Council and the Planning Commission, and any specialty meetings. Residents will be able to view meetings in real time, as well as looking at past events along with their agendas, minutes, reports, and video, simply by going to the meetings page of the Olathe City Council.
The meetings can be viewed on any platform that supports video playback, including tablets, smart phone, laptop and desktop computers. All videos are accompanied by an indexed agenda, so that viewers can easily find the agenda items they are most interested in viewing.
The streaming is possible because the city has partnered with Swagit Productions, LLC., a leader in streaming video and webcasting. Michael Copeland, the mayor of Olathe, said that the city's partnership with Swagit makes the entire municipal decision-making process more transparent, and will encourage citizens to become engaged, and remain engaged, in their local government.
For their part, Swagit spokesman Michael Osuna says Olathe has taken the first steps toward being recognized as a technologically-savvy, innovative city, and he is happy his company has taken part in this progress.
Although this type of opportunity is valuable, many people may still not have personal web-enabled devices, and will be relying on public computers to view videos. City officials could work with a postcard printing company on a card for a city-wide Mailing, announcing the service.
