Olathe hosts family night

Locals can celebrate the 19th century with the entire family at Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Historic Site.

The site, often known as Mahaffie House, was originally built in 1857 as a rest area along the Westport Route of the Santa Fe Trail. It was transformed into a museum and gift shop in 1979. Those that visit the Mahaffie House can experience reenactments of the American Civil War and catch a glimpse into the daily activities carried out on a farm in the 1860s and 1870s.

Family Fun Night features live music from the Olathe Civic Band, a Mahaffie House tour, live history reenactments of using a cook-stove, taking care of farm animals, and agriculture. Those interested in attending can take their blankets, lawn chair, and picnic baskets. There will be pies, lemonade, ice cream, and root beer on sale. An 1860s fireworks show will take place at 9:30 pm.

The event is free-for-all courtesy of the Mahaffie Foundation. Activities done in the Heritage Center cost $1. Banner printing can help with the organization of historic moments or events such as this.

Family Fun Night will be on Thursday, July 7, from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. The Mahaffie House is at 1200 East Kansas City Road in Olathe, Kansas 66061. Those interested can visit the website for more direction or information.
