Olathe gets Gold in health and wellness

Healthy KC, an organization comprised of several health and wellness leaders in the region, as well as Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City, and the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, has named Olathe a Gold Level Healthy KC Certified city.

The initiative that grants the certification is the Healthy KC Workplace Wellness Certification program, and it recognizes organizations throughout the area for their innovation in creating a healthy culture in the workplace. The criteria for the award cross five areas – a well-designed and built environment, successful integration of work and life, smoking cessation, physical activity, and nutrition. Olathe has now been recognized in this manner for four years. Officials working in communities like this could add the honor to the official Letterheads.

Healthy KC’s mission is to involve the entire community in an effort to find real solutions that help individuals and organizations make changes that will make their environments healthier. It seeks to create an overall culture of wellness and health in the Kansas City area.

The Healthy KC Commission started conducting research in 2014, looking at programs that were already in place, as well as those that worked and those that were less successful. Using this information and information gathered from other cities, Action Teams met to develop programs specific to Kansas City.
