What's Happening in Olathe, KS…

Olathe continues effort to revitalize downtown area

During the last 10 years, Olathe officials have taken steps to revitalize the city's downtown, and recently stepped up the effort by offering three properties it owns for sale.

On January 3, Olathe issued a request for proposals for potential developments on the properties, one of which is the site of the public library's downtown branch. The other two are near the city hall on Santa Fe Street.

The properties total almost six acres, most of which hold government offices, with a few restaurants and retail shops mixed in. Although Olathe officials say they would let the market determine the types of developments to enter the area, they hope the proposed projects would include housing projects; mostly multifamily structures that would increase the population density in the area. An increase in the population would attract new businesses of various kinds to the area.

Among the steps Olathe has taken in the past was a $42m project that elevated the train tracks to keep trains from tying up downtown traffic. Santa Fe Street was streetscaped to make it more attractive, and a new courthouse is on the drawing board. Since locals have expressed a desire for a library to remain downtown, a new one could be built.

Projects like this can benefit if officials work with a newsletter printing company to create an informative letter for community residents.
