An upcoming show in Johnson County will see the coming together of the talents of Kansas City jazz trio Eclipse and poet Glenn North.
The show will feature the music of Eclipse – which combines genres like jazz, funk, and rhythm and blues – providing a backdrop to North’s words. Performing as part of Eclipse will be vocalist and pianist Everrett Freeman, bassist DeAndre Manning, and drummer Michael Warren, who combine for more than 75 years of experience in the music business. North, an award-winning poet who currently serves as the director of the Bruce A. Watkins Cultural Center, will draw on his years of experience in the area’s spoken word scene. Jazz and poetry have often featured in combination with each other, from the works of artists like Gil-Scott Heron to the slam poetry tradition.
The Eclipse concert is part of Johnson County Community College’s Winterlude series, showcasing the diversity of the area’s jazz scene. The series got started this November with a performance by Greg Carroll and the Midnight Blue Jazz Quintet. These events hope to bring in music fans from Johnson County cities like Overland Park and Olathe. Events like this are often advertised on campus and beyond through poster printing and other advertising methods.
The Winterlude show featuring Eclipse and Glenn North will take place on January 23 at the Polsky Theatre in the Midwest Trust Centre, located on the Johnson County Community College Campus in Overland Park.
