A sprawling stretch of open land is closer to development after a January 5 meeting in which Olathe's city council members agreed to rezone the area.
The land, which lies near Pflumm Road and 143rd Street, will be transformed into a residential development to be called The Willows, featuring single-family homes. The development will have 33 acres of open agricultural space, and 210 lots, but the plan will need additional approval from both the airport commission and the Johnson County Commission, since it is less than a mile from Johnson County Executive Airport.
Michael Menghini owns the land, and Menghini's attorney, Rod Richardson, said his client has worked as hard as he can to make sure the development works for the airport, the county, and the city. Richardson said Menghini has done more than anyone else he has worked with to satisfy all the demands placed on him by the various agencies and residents. According to Richardson, the plan meets all requirements—the first in more than 20 years to do so.
The Airport Commission will consider The Willows rezoning at its February 24 meeting, and the matter will go before the Johnson County Commission in March.
Olathe officials might consider creating Brochures to mail to residents explaining the project, which might help alleviate some of the concerns that have been expressed about the project.
