The City of Olathe has announced the schedule for the 2018 Civic Academy, for which it is currently accepting applications.
The academy will begin soon, and will comprise nine sessions in total.
These interactive meetings will allow students to learn how the Olathe government works, and become involved in government at the municipal level. They will also be able to meet other residents of the city, as well as elected officials, and city staff members. Classes, lectures, and demonstrations will be given by representatives from various city departments, and only those who live or work in Olathe are eligible to attend.
The Civic Academy is similar to the citizens academies that are held by police departments. Those academies are designed to familiarize residents with the way police operate, and often include lectures on subjects like how traffic stops are handled, and preserving a crime scene. Olathe's academy is unusual in that it will deal with government operations rather than policing.
Residents who are interested in attending the Academy must apply by January 2, 2018, and space is limited. The Academy itself runs from January 11 through March 8, meeting on Thursday nights. Since the meetings are in the evening, dinner is provided, and the course is free to participants.
