The Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm in Olathe was, as the name implies, a stagecoach stop for passengers traveling on the Santa Fe Trail. The farm is now getting ready for the summer with a number of activities on tap.
The site is owned by the City of Olathe and operated by its Parks and Recreation Department. Visitors can see what life was like on a farm in the 1870s, and the property is listed on both the Kansas and the National Registers of Historic Places. The buildings date back to about 1865, and some twenty acres are left of the original 340 that comprised the original farm.
Summer began at Mahaffie on May 24, and continues through the warmer months. First up are stagecoach rides, which are available Wednesdays through Sundays, from 10 am until 4 pm. On Sundays, the rides are scheduled between noon and 4 pm.
Other special events include a Civil War boot camp called “Eating Goober Peas,” scheduled for July 10-14, 2017, from 9 am to noon each day. The fee for the week is $70, and registration is required. Also on tap is an event exploring construction techniques from the 1860s, called “Can We Build It?” This takes place July 26, 2017, from 9 am until 4 pm, with a $30 fee. Many more events are scheduled, with details on the website.
