Cook-off time approaches in Olathe

Sorghum Saturday and Chuckwagon Cook-off will be at the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Historic Site next month.

The Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Historic Site is the only stagecoach in operation along the Santa Fe Trail. It offers daily activities and events that take visitors back to the 1860s. Guests can take a ride in a replica of the Concord-style of coach or the original mud wagon stagecoach. They also have a farm and Heritage Center with exhibits and a gift shop.

Locals can join volunteers and Mahaffie staff in harvesting Sorghum Saturday. A cereal plant, the sorghum will be cut, pressed to extract the sap, and then boiled to make molasses. Those interested in participating must wear jeans and work boots. Attendees can also try samples from the Chuckwagon Cook-off, then vote for the best dish.

Admission is $9 for adults, $7 for children 5 to 11 years old, and free for children four years old and under. Flyer printing is affordable and a great way for organizers to provide easy-to-read information about an event such as this.

Sorghum Saturday and Chuckwagon Cook-off will be on Saturday, October 8, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. It will be at 1200 East Kansas City Road in Olathe. Visit its website for more information on this event and other activities.
