Sallie Mae, the company that originates, services, and collects loans for private education, is expanding its Indianapolis operation.
The expansion, which is estimated to cost $15.7m, will make Indianapolis the largest Sallie Mae office outside its headquarters in Newark, Delaware. The measure will bring back customer service jobs that have been offshored, and add 278 employees to the office.
Sallie Mae now has a new home at Woodfield Crossing, and has been moving existing operations to the 76,000-square-foot facility from another office approximately five miles away. Sallie Mae now has 189 employees in Indianapolis, which is an increase from the 160 working here earlier.
About two years ago, Sallie Mae split into two entities: Sallie Mae, which continues to compete with other lenders in the student loan market; and Navient, which manages student loans. Since Sallie Mae is competing with other lenders in the field, it needed to base its customer service employees in the U.S. It has moved 500 jobs from the Philippines back to the United States since it created Navient. The Indianapolis location is the company’s third call center; the other two are in Delaware and Florida. Across the country, there are more than 1,200 people working for the company.
