Riley Hospital expanding emergency services

The Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis is set to expand to include more traditional services.

The hospital is known primarily for treating children with serious medical problems, a mission which, in 1995, won it a Level 1 trauma certification. Today, Riley remains the only Level 1 pediatric trauma facility in Indiana. As a result of its concentration on seriously ill children, the Riley emergency room tended to serve chronically ill children who were to be admitted, rather than what might be called “ordinary” emergencies like broken arms, but this is set to change.

The facility is spending millions of dollars, and will add to its staff in the ER, in order to treat children with emergencies of all kinds, from sports injuries to fevers, whether or not they have an chronic underlying condition.

In its revamping of its services, Riley has added 14 more emergency physicians—from 12 on staff in 2012 to 26 today—and will add an additional five positions. Workstations have been reconfigured to enable nurses to monitor more patients, and in the emergency department itself, an area is being built where victims of sexual abuse can be seen in private. Another four-bed area is being constructed for patients who need psychiatric evaluation.

Facilities like this can benefit by working with brochure printers, who can create Booklets that outline new construction and list the services now available.
