Pop tab collection drive tops 33 million

A recent collection has brought the total number of pop tabs collected over the last 16 years to 33 million, raising $15, 208 for the Ronald McDonald House.

Kiwanis International sponsors Key Clubs in high schools, and these organizations encourage young people to perform acts of service to their communities. For the last 16 years, schools throughout the area have participated in a Pop Tab Contest on behalf of the Ronald McDonald House in Indianapolis. This year, the collection gathered 1,959,866 pop tabs – weighting a total of 1,487lbs – to be recycled. This added up to a $743.50 donation to the House.

Ronald McDonald Houses provide housing, food, support, and activities to families whose children are hospitalized in facilities nearby – in this case, Riley Hospital. The fees for saying in a Ronald McDonald House are nominal, and are waived entirely if the family cannot afford them. Riley is a pediatric hospital with 10 areas of specialization.

The House's Rachel Moehle, along with Ronald McDonald himself, went to Rockcreek to present the first place trophy to children at Rockcreek Elementary. They collected the greatest number of tabs per student in the contest. Busy Bees Academy, which won last year, came in second this time, with Mt. Healthy Elementary claiming third place.

Such efforts can benefit if organizers work with a postcard printing company, which can create a card for an area-wide Mailing describing the contest.
