John Morrell Food Group, one of the country's oldest meatpacking companies, is planning to build a distribution center near Greenfield, approximately 15 miles to the east of Indianapolis.
The plant will comprise about 426,000 square feet, and cost some $43.5 million. The operation will also create approximately 260 new positions by late 2016, and the plant will operate as a distribution center.
Construction of the facility, which is refrigerated, is scheduled to start immediately, with completion expected within 10 to 12 months. The new jobs are full-time positions, and the average pay for the roles is $19.51 per hour, according to the executive director of Hancock County's economic development council, Skip Kuker.
The county offered Morrell a 10-year tax abatement incentive, which should save the company approximately $5.1m in various taxes. In addition, the state's economic development corporation offered as much as $1.5m in tax credits, as well as infrastructure aid amounting to $250,000.
Morrell is a subsidiary of Smithfield Foods, which is based in Virginia. The company specializes in bacon, ham, and pork products of various kinds. There are seventeen Morrell plants throughout the nation, and the company goes back to 1827, when John Morrell & Co. was founded in England.
