For the 40th year, the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon drew a huge number of participants. In fact, this year, more than 30,000 runners took part.
Taking place on May 7 this year, the run is a half-marathon that covers 13.1 miles, starting from Military Park, located in downtown Indianapolis, and following various city streets out to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Once there, the runners get to run one lap (2.5 miles) around the famous racetrack before heading back to the city.
The race is one of the largest half-marathons in the country. For those who wanted a less-strenuous day, a 5K was available, and more than 4,500 registered to participate.
Approximately 4,000 volunteers worked to make the events a success, manning water stations, giving out snacks after the race, and supervising participants as they picked up their packets. One first-time volunteer, Megan Smith, said her day started at 6:00 am. She was in Military Park where she peeled bananas to hand to runners as they finished the race.
Food was available from various vendors located in Military Park, and a stage gave bands a platform on which they played all morning. The weather cooperated as well—temperatures were in the 60s, with slight rain and an overcast sky being perfect for running.
