Metropolis Lifestyle Center gets a makeover

The Metropolis Lifestyle Center, a mall in Plainfield and about 10 miles from Indianapolis, is getting a facelift. The renovations are expected to total about $11 million.

Plainfield is providing approximately 40%, or about $4.5 million, for the project, which is focusing mostly on enhancing the aesthetics of the center. There are no plans to change any of the store interiors, or add additional space to the center, which currently comprises about 600,000 square feet. Instead, the goal of the makeover is to make public areas “softer” and more attractive, with most of the renovations being made to the central plaza.

Among the changes proposed by Woolpert, a design firm from Dayton, Ohio, are additional landscaping, the use of earthier colors, an improved fountain, a gazebo, and better lighting for the plaza.

The center is now owned by Poag Shopping Centers, which is located in Memphis, Tennessee. Poag's president and CEO, Josh Poag, said the original plaza and other outdoor spaces were “too harsh”, relying heavily on metallic features, concrete, and “severe” colors such as blue.

The changes should appeal to the mall's core customers, who Poeg identified as women from 18 to 50. The work is scheduled to wind up in mid-November, in time for holiday shopping.

Center operators could work with banner printing companies to create festive, seasonal Banners to hang throughout the center – particularly in the renovated outdoor spaces.
