The Indianapolis Indians, a minor league baseball team affiliated with the Pittsburgh Pirates, opened its season on April 14 with a win
The season opener featured the Indians hosting the Columbus Clippers at Victory Field, and emerging victorious by a score of 5-1. The game began a six-day home stand for the team, which will play three games against the Clippers followed by three games against the Toledo Mud Hens.
The game started at 7:05 pm, with ceremonial first pitches being thrown by both Mike Pence, Indiana's governor, and Joe Hogsett, the mayor of Indianapolis. A fireworks show took place after the game, and fans were encouraged to wait and enjoy the festivities.
The team gave away magnets with their 2016 schedule on it to the first 12,500 fans who came through the gates. Fans who came dressed in Indians Apparel were able to enjoy a free chicken sandwich at various Chick-fil-A stores throughout the Indianapolis area.
Victory Field opened in July, 1996, making this year the venue's 20th anniversary. The Indians plan to commemorate the occasion during the July 8 game.
The Indians finished last season only one win short of the International League Championship, so fans expect a lot of the team this year.
Victory Field management could work with a banner printing company to create fun Banners to hang throughout the venue for the opening home game series.
