The last piece of art is in place on the Cultural Trail in Indianapolis, and volumes of footfall so far suggest that locals are keen to see it.
The piece is called ‘Swarm Street’, and is a project using approximately 2,000 LEDs, some in the pavement and some hanging from an aluminum framework, to create changing patterns of light as people walk or ride their bikes through. The Swarm is some 600 feet long and is designed to resemble a bunch of fireflies.
This part of the Cultural Trail runs for several hundred feet under a parking garage, and connects Fountain Square with Downtown via Virginia Avenue. Swarm Street was the last piece of art to be finished, since there were technical problems getting the lights to work properly. A video shows them lighting up as people ride or walk through the piece. The problems were solved in time for the holiday weekend, and thousands of pedestrians were able to enjoy the artwork.
In addition to adding sheer beauty to the area, the Swarm solves a problem for bikers and pedestrians by giving them a safe and attractive route through the garage.
City officials could work with a banner printing company to create a display piece for the garage, indicating the entrance to the Swarm to encourage visitors to go through.
