Indianapolis to go car-free for a day

Indianapolis is encouraging people to park their vehicles for a day, joining the World Car Free Day for the first time.

The event, as its name implies, is worldwide, and encourages people everywhere to get out of their cars and walk, ride bicycles, or take some form of public transportation to work.

In Indianapolis, the Central Indiana Regional Transportation Authority (CIRTA)’s Commuter Connect is promoting the idea of people using alternate transportation, and points out there are opportunities to walk, cycle, take the bus, or ride with a carpool or vanpool. CIRTA is promoting the idea in nine counties.

NUVO and NUVO.net, an independent news organization in Indianapolis with both a magazine and website, is encouraging people to take a pledge that they will leave the car at home that day. The people who sign up will be entered to win prizes including tickets to various events, a Pacers Bikeshare membership, or an IndyGo pass (IndyGo is the nickname of the city’s public transportation system).

CIRTA is encouraging people to extend the car-free day and consider moving to public transportation permanently. The agency can help people find alternative options, and notes that there are tax incentives available for employers who make their workplace more commuter-friendly.

Car-free day is this Thursday, September 22. Organizations that plan these kinds of events might benefit by creating Flyers for area-wide distribution.
