The Indianapolis Symphonic Choir, one of the oldest such ensembles in the country, recently revealed tickets are now on sale for its upcoming 2018-2019 season. The Choir dates back to 1937, when it was begun at the request of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, to be the ISO's partner in performing great choral-orchestral music. The two organizations have remained independent but work closely together.
Michael Davis, the Choir's assistant artistic director, says the upcoming season will have something everyone can enjoy, and there will be some changes as well. The popular holiday event, the Festival of Carols, will move to the Warren Performing Arts Center; the featured performer at this event is Michele McConnell, who appeared for eight years in the “Phantom of the Opera” on Broadway, playing the role of Carlotta. McConnell is a native of Indianapolis. Other composers featured this year include Haydn, Handel, and Elgar.
In addition, for the ninth year the Choir will host the Christmas Carol Commission Competition. The contest is for composers younger than 35, who will have their music performed during the Festival of Carols.
The season begins October 7, with a performance of Haydn's work “The Creation.” A complete schedule of works, their composers, and the locations of the performances is available on the Choir's website. Composers interested in the carol competition have until the end of August 31 to submit their work.
