Indianapolis offers two options for tree recycling

For years, Indianapolis residents have been able to recycle their Christmas trees by taking them to local parks, but the city is now allowing them to take their trees to the curb to recycle them.

Indianapolis officials tried the new method because they felt residents would find it more convenient to take their trees to their curb, rather than having to get them to a park. However, the previous program for picking trees up at the curb also required residents to cut them into sections no longer than four feet, and wrap them with rope or twine.

Facing a lot of negative feedback from county residents, the city reversed its decision and said it will reinstate its policy of allowing residents to drop off their trees at the city’s parks. They can start recycling their trees immediately, but if they wish, they can also continue curbside recycling. Residents have until January 31 to take their trees to one of the eight parks that have been designated as recycling sites.

The eight parks designated for recycling the trees are the Ellenberger Park, Broad Ripple Park, Krannert Park, Garfield Park, Perry Park, Sahm Park, Northwestway Park and Riverside Park.

The city could work with a flyer printing company to create a mailer for residents explaining the change in policy and listing the parks.
