Indianapolis museum receives Star Wars artifact

The Children's Museum of Indianapolis recently welcomed a new exhibit: a gigantic TIE fighter from the ‘Star Wars’ films.

The exhibit is a huge balloon sculpture by Brian Getz, a local balloon artist.

During December 4 and 5, Getz and a companion were busy reassembling his sculpture, which is 20 feet wide, 20 feet long, and 25 feet tall. Before arriving at the museum, the TIE fighter went on a short “flight”, dangling underneath a tethered hot-air balloon. For a brief period, people could see the TIE fighter hanging about 25 feet in the air.

The sculpture comprises more than 3,500 balloons, which are filled with normal air. Getz and about ten volunteers took two days to fully assemble the fighter. Getz believes the sculpture could last as long as two weeks before it deflates.

Children's Museum spokeswoman Kimberly Harms said the balloon sculpture, which has only been on display for a few days, is already hugely popular with visitors. She notes that the sculpture is so big most people photograph it from the upper level.

Getz is already dreaming of his next Star Wars project – a mammoth balloon sculpture comprising about 50,000 balloons that would need 40-50 volunteers to assemble. The subject? A “full-size Millennium Falcon”.

The museum could create Brochures about this project, as well as Getz's upcoming sculptures and other current exhibits, for both Mailing and hand distribution.
