Foundry will bring jobs to Indianapolis area

ID Castings, a company based in Ohio, has big plans for the Indianapolis area, including job creation.

The company bought the foundry in Noblesville, about 30 miles from Indianapolis. For years the foundry had struggled to stay open, and was facing final closure, when ID stepped in in 2013. Four months later, it announced a five-year plan during which time it will invest $51 million to renovate the foundry. Along with the purchase come 250 new jobs that will be added through 2018.

At one time, there were 6,150 foundries making metal castings in the United States; today there are 1,978. However, as the economy recovers, sales of castings are forecast to grow by approximately 6%, totaling more than $37 billion in 2016.

According to the American Foundry Society, the increase may be due to better quality American-made products, high productivity of domestic workers, and other factors. John Kelley, the plant engineer for ID Casting's Noblesville facility, said these are the reasons that led the company to decide to revamp that factory.

He also said the foundry was in an ideal area that will allow ID to increase its production over time. It is also easier and simpler to refit a foundry than to construct one from the ground up.

ID Castings' officials might consider working with brochure printers on a booklet describing the positions open. They could supply it to area employment agencies.
