Downtown Indianapolis to get new playspace

Downtown Indy, Inc., the Indianapolis Parks Foundation, the Indianapolis Colts, Indy Parks, and neighborhood groups recently revealed plans for a ‘Canal Playspace’ to be created downtown. The project is a space where everyone can have fun, from the youngest children to senior citizens.

The Indianapolis Colts Foundation will fund the project, which will be sited at the northern end of the Canal, near Walnut Street in the city's downtown. Among the planned amenities are stepping stones, nets, a spinner bowl, and a vertical climbing tower. Also, of course, it will afford visitors the all-important city views.

Joe Hogsett, the mayor of Indianapolis, said the Canal Playspace will be the first installation of its type on the Canal Walk, and the Colts, as well as the city, are going to help families improve their health by providing them with this playground. He added that parks are vital if communities are to thrive, and he believes the new park will become special to residents.

The Canal Playspace, which will be about an acre in size, will be connected to the Indianapolis Cultural Trail. Jenny Burrough, vice president of the Parks Foundation, said the organization was excited to see its vision of the Canal Playspace become reality, as it will encourage more people to get outside. The Canal Playspace is slated to open in September.

Projects like this can be even more fun if officials work with a banner printing company to create a festive banner to celebrate the opening.
