Cummins coming to Market Square Arena

The wondering over the future of the site of the Market Square Arena looks to be over, with the news that Cummins, Inc. will be building a new headquarters there.

Indianapolis residents have long speculated about the direction of the arena, where the Pacers used to play. The building was razed in 2001 and parking lots have occupied the site ever since.

Cummins, Inc., which manufactures engines, is based in Columbus, and will build a division headquarters on the former Market Square Arena site. The company will spend some $30m in the effort, which will create a global distribution business center. The building will house about 400 employees, about 100 of whom will move from two other offices in Indianapolis, and another 150 of whom will transfer from Columbus. Cummins also says it will add approximately 150 jobs at the new facility in the next few years. Construction should start this year, with completion slated for late 2016.

Although the building's design has not been finalized, it is known that there will be green space, a parking garage, room for retailers on the ground floor, and a design in keeping with Cummin's commitment to what it calls significant architecture.

Since the building itself promises to be of significant architectural importance, management could work with brochure printers to explain the Cummins Foundation's architecture program, and profile the designer.
