People who are interested in tracing their ancestry will have an opportunity to do so later this month, as the Indiana Historical Society is holding two workshops where people can trace their family tree.
The first workshop will be given by Allison DePrey Singleton, who believes that people who do research into their family's history can bring the past alive. She describes her workshop as a beginner’s course, or a refresher course for those who have been researching for a while. Singleton is a genealogy librarian with the Allen County Public Library Genealogy Center.
The second workshop will be given by Deborah Abbot, a genealogist who specializes in African-American research. She will teach her class how to use oral history and death announcements to find the records necessary to trace their families. She will also help class members learn where these records are, how to use one document to find another, and how to analyze them.
Abbott will offer her workshop on February 20, and Singleton will hold her lecture on February 26. Both will be held at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, are open to the public, and cost $10 each, or $8 for members of the IHC. The center is at 450 West Ohio Street in Indianapolis.
The lecturers might want to create Brochures for attendees that recap their talks, and include a list of resources for further research.
