What's Happening in Indianapolis, IN…

Volunteers and participants enjoy Indy Do Day

Jameson Camp in Indianapolis provides thousands of children in the city and the surrounding area with outdoor experiences, and October 2 saw almost 300 volunteers got together to work on maintenance at the camp.

The volunteers came from CNO Financial Group and the Indiana Pacers organizations, Indianapolis’s professional basketball team. This is the third year CNO has participated in this event, known as Indy Do Day. At this time, companies in Indianapolis and the surrounding area encourage their workers to leave the office to perform services for others.

The activities provided include a summer camp for disadvantaged teenagers, a leadership program for teens, and a program on environmental education aimed at elementary school-age students. Dan Shepley, the camp’s executive director, said they serve children who cannot attend camp because of financial concerns, or other difficulties. One camp, the Far-Westside camp, offers a summer session for children who have been impacted in some way by HIV/AIDS. Far-Westside is the only such camp in the state.

He added that some of the kids who attend the Jameson Camp’s programs have never taken a walk in the woods, or know anything about the outdoors. It is therefore very difficult for such young people to appreciate the environment, or have any concern about it.

City officials could work with a brochure printing company on a mailer for companies, explaining Indy Do Day and encouraging volunteers.
