Schools vote to save tree

A tree that had been scheduled to be cut down will be preserved. The oak tree had been scheduled to be removed to make way for a parking lot.

The bur oak tree stands at Indianapolis's Eastwood Middle School, and has been examined by Jerome Delbridge, who works with the Indiana Forest Alliance as an arborist. Delbridge said the tree, which has a diameter greater than four feet, is likely at least 200 years old, and is still healthy.

When the school district announced its plans to cut down the tree, it was met with intense opposition from the public. It was then school officials asked Delbridge to look at the tree. They also reviewed the plans for the project that had been drawn up by Schmidt Associates, an architecture firm in Indianapolis. Officials who have a landmark like this to work with can use graphic design to incorporate details into official stationery or other papers.

A new plan has been created that has parking to the west of the tree, and a drive to the north, but nothing either south of the tree, or encircling it. The plan also considers that a root protection zone has to extend 52 feet from the tree. A fence is planned to mark off the area, and Delbridge or another arborist will examine the tree every month to make sure it stays healthy.
