Restoration finishing on monument in Indianapolis

The Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Indianapolis's downtown has been undergoing repairs and renovations, which are now almost complete.

According to a June 17, 2015 news item, city officials believe the scaffolding currently surrounding the monument will be removed in time for the holiday celebration on the Fourth of July.

The monument, which sits in a downtown plaza with a fountain on either side, is 113 years old, and made of limestone. Crews have been working since last October to repair water leaks, as well as damage to the bolts that hold the various bronze figures in place on the structure. The work has necessitated the use of scaffolding, which make it difficult to see the details of the tower.

Stewart Goodwin, who is the director of the Indiana War Memorial Commission, says the repairs are now complete, and he anticipates the scaffolding will be taken down by July 1.

The current work is only the latest in a series of repairs made to the memorial. Probably the most notable repair in recent years took place in 2011, when the bronze sculpture that sits on the top of the tower was removed for restoration.

City officials might want to consider working with a banner printing company to create a colorful banner to display near the monument to celebrate the restoration, as well as the Fourth of July holiday.
