Mayor to get locals warmed up with bike ride

Bicyclists who wonder what it might be like to take a ride during the coldest months of the year, in the company of the mayor of a major city, are about to get a chance to find out.

Outgoing Indianapolis mayor Greg Ballard will lead the riders in the Polar Bear Pedal, the fourth such annual outing.

The ride is a nine-mile course that winds through the city's downtown, as well as nearby neighborhoods. The start is at the Indianapolis City Market, located at 222 East Market Street. Public works spokesman Scott Manning said there were 1,100 riders in last year's event, which was more than ever before.

Major Ballard, a cycling enthusiast who has been known to ride as far as 50 miles in a single day, hosts three cycling events each year, with the other two being April's ‘Spring Fever’ ride and the ‘Mayor's Bike Ride’, which takes place in June. This will be Ballard's last Polar Bear Pedal, as he has said he will not seek reelection.

The Polar Bear Pedal is scheduled for tomorrow, January 3, at 10:00 am. Participants can register online, or at the site. Riders must wear a safety helmet, and are asked to bring a canned food item for donation to charity.

Pedal organizers might like to work with a banner printing company to create an outdoor display banner that marks the starting line for the ride.
